Piazza San Sepolcro (1919) and Piazzale Loreto (1945), both in Milan, are respectively the starting and ending points of this schematic journey, which attempts to recount the history of Fascism through hundreds of dates marking its most significant moments, from its birth to its demise.
With no claim to completeness, the events listed—preceded by date, place and sometimes time—concern the major measures of the Fascist regime in domestic, foreign, economic and cultural policy. The map deliberately contains no commentary or analysis, which are left entirely to the reader.

Some “windows” graphically interrupt the narrative and host the opinions of witnesses, interpreters or observers of the regime’s events. The testimony of Henri Bérard from 1929 symbolically marks the turning point in the history of Fascism and in this work. His statement, “Mussolini is everywhere, in name and likeness,” conveys the omnipresence of the Duce in every aspect of Italian public and private life, attesting to the transition from a phase of consolidation to the full manifestation of Fascism’s totalitarian dimension.
All testimonies prior to 1929 are Italian and merge into an almost unified chorus narrating national anti-fascism. After 1929, however, it is mainly foreign observers who intervene in the narrative, reflecting the fact that from the early 1930s Italy had assumed “a position in Europe such as it had never held before,” in the words of Winston Churchill, and that Mussolini had by then become an indispensable figure in the international political arena.
