Universal Declaration of Human Rights | Article 1
The Preamble of the Declaration emphasizes how "disregard and contempt for human rights have led to acts of barbarism that offend the conscience of humanity,and considers it essential that "human rights be protected by legal norms." To prevent the recurrence of conflict and violence, the Declaration defines the inalienable rights of every human being and for the first time enshrines the total absence of distinction between race, sex, religion, and political ideology. Since its adoption, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights has evolved from being a mere declaration of intent, legally non-binding, to becoming the lynchpin of the international system of human rights protection. It is the base of following conventions and legally binding documents that deserve to be known.
