PSYCHE

Psyche is a tribute to Roberto Assagioli, a Venetian psychiatrist (1888-1974), who was the creator of psychosynthesis, a psychological theory and practice that developed from psychoanalysis into humanistic psychology. Psychosynthesis represents one of the few independently psychotherapeutic currents in Italy. The map represents the functioning of our Psyche in the shape of a flower. This “flower” map is based on the "star" pattern made by Assagioli himself. There are six main functions of the psyche. They are the tools that man, as a biopsychic being, have to create relationships with the external environment, but also with the inner and transpersonal world. The texts of each petal explain the functions of the psyche that the ego, central and empty, manages by means of the will, the corolla.

« So sometimes we satisfy, within certain limits, our senses and our instincts; at other times we do what drives us, a passion, a feeling; in certain moments we take the luxury of following (up to a point!) the incitements of our moral conscience, we try somehow to achieve an ideal. But we do not go deep in any direction, we juggle with a series of twists, compromises, adaptations and, let’s face it, hypocrisy, with ourselves and with others.»

Roberto Assagioli | psychiatrist

Assagioli identifies the six main functions of the psyche: sensory, emotional (feeling), instinctual (impulse and desire), mental (thinking), imaginative and the intuitive one, which more than others represent the physiology of the psyche. These six functions develop at different times throughout life: the sensory and instinctual are the first, the oldest. Then the emotional function develops and only later the mental and imaginative ones. The will oversees the harmonious and orderly management of the psyche. It allows the different functions to express themselves at the appropriate time to increase the wealth of individual richness and wholeness. If the will is weak. one or more functions will be dominant causing a disharmonious imbalance in the personality. The psychic ego, empty, is at the center of our flower. The corolla represents the will, the petals the six main functions. The definitions that extend to the coils of the petals eventually get lost in the sea of the unconscious.

This map depicts the ideal "flower" where the six main functions of the psyche are perfectly balanced with each other. Everyone has his or her own personal flower. The flower of the writer of these lines, mine, may have the petal of emotions twice as long and the mental one somewhat atrophied, but I assure you that I am working on it to improve it and myself. The different coils coming out of the flower turn out to be less and less readable because they are reaching for the bottom of the picture representing the unconscious.

« So sometimes we gratify, within certain limits, our senses, our instincts; at other times we do what a passion, a feeling urges us to; at certain times we take the luxury of following (up to a certain point!) the incitements of our moral conscience, we try to realize an ideal in some way. But we do not go all the way in any direction, we juggle with a series of retreats, compromises, adaptations and, let's face it, hypocrisies with ourselves and others » Roberto Assagioli
